Our Story
A personal experience that became a bigger mission.
Ubuntu Mama started with a simple question: why shouldn’t every mother have the kind of support I had after having my babies?
I’m Munawwar, a South African living in the Netherlands. After both of my daughters were born, a trained professional came into our home during those first few days to help us find our feet.
She helped with feeding, checked that I was recovering well, showed us what to look out for with our newborn, and was there when I had those “Is this normal?” moments. Having someone knowledgeable beside me made those early days feel so much less overwhelming.
It made me realise just how much difference good postpartum care can make.
Back home in South Africa, we have a beautiful history of looking after new mothers — through family, community and cultural traditions. But that support isn't always available when a mother needs it most. And many mothers don't even know that professional postpartum care is something they can ask for.
We want to change that.
Ubuntu Mama is building a village around mothers — connecting them with trusted postpartum care providers who can offer practical, emotional and physical support in those early weeks.
We also want to help grow that village by supporting more people to become trained postpartum care providers, so that this kind of care becomes something more mothers know about, trust and can access.
Because having a baby changes everything. And no mother should have to figure it all out alone.
